Before to many webmasters did just look at the PR and nothing more.
Mostly they made the mistake not to look how the PR did get there.

For this reason...the PR gone is the best what could happen.
I expect also that soon more backlinks will show up in google because
a PR 3 was the limit for the backlinks to show up...so this must change also.
(if not then the PR is still there but not for us to see !!)

Back to the question...

Alexa does not lie about the traffic...so if someone has a an alexa rank from 500.000 and your is also in that range then you know how much traffic he does get. (30.000 per month in this case)
Its also an untold story about the google authority/ alexa rank connection still i think there is one.

And linkage between 2 authorative site can only be good for both.

Others factors to look at.
(1) the linkpartner should not have to much outbound links...if he has many...let it be.
(2) is the site listed in the google directory (dmoz) and yahoo if possible.
(3) Is it a clean site...no spammy techniques...or cloaking.
(check the google cache...if no chache shown then be carefull)
Best cloaking is done by googles ip numbers and with disabled cache !!

The reason is simple.....if you link to a bad site who gets discovered
with cloaking techniques then your site might end up bad in the ranks also.

Combine those factors and you can be sure to have a linkpartner that helps your site. You can also take these rules for your own site but keep in mind that alexa will go up once the site is in DMOZ and does rank.

We have compared many sites...and i must say that Alexa does a good job. Also sites who rank in the top 1000 are checked... (alexa/real stats)
and they are close enough to select linkpartners with it !!

And if the "Domainlinkpopularität" is really good then Alexa will show it by the traffic results. !!

There are a lot of "Hobby-Webmaster" like me who manage their site just for fun and without any commercial interest but nevertheless have some knowledge on SEO. On the other hand, there are also a lot of "professionals" out there who don't seem to do a very professional job.

Maybe "hobby webmaster" are the wrong words for it !!

I see also webdesign companies who don't even use the site description or keywords. (keywords are not used by google but for sure by others)

If i see this ....then these could be named hobby webmasters even they get paid for it.

If you know some about seo...and know how to build a clear page with all in it then in fact you are not a hobby webmaster anymore since you could earn real cash with it...(working for others or with adsense)

es scheint sich immernoch nicht herumgesprochen zu haben, dass man optimizer auf deutsch anreden kann, weil er das versteht, aber sich nicht traut, deutsch zu antworten...

das problem an der sache ist halt auch, dass man die links immer im auge behalten muss und ständig prüfen muss, ob der gelinkte webmaster nicht doch mit dem cloaken anfängt. hast du (optimizer) schon seiten deshalb verloren?

Nein

No...i did not lose a site by others....only by myself before (allegra update)

Since that i changed the whole link structure of my network (80 plus sites)
and it worked fine..

Linkpartners i exchange mostly with my supporting sites...not with the site who makes the money, if one would go down...then it will not take my main site with it.

Also its important to have a balance in the links.
Linking to a bad site but still having plenty good sites linking to you will help you also to prevent going down.

Mit dem Wert, den Alexa liefert, kann aber kaum jemand was anfangen, es ist halt eine mehr oder weniger große Zahl. Da wäre es schon besser ein Fixum zu haben, wie eben den PR (nur halt aussagekräftiger). Linkpop hat mit seinem "Linkrank" da ja schon einen guten Anfang gemacht, sowas könnte G. auch in Zukunft anbieten statt dem PR und der grüne Balken bekäme (endlich mal) Sinn. Wenn man das auf Domainpop runterbricht (was mit Yahoo ja sehr gut geht), dann hat man doch schon einen sehr schönen Wert, anhand dessen man sehn kann, was eine Seite bringt, wenn man auch ihr einen Link bekommt. Wenn man (Google) dann noch das Wachstum der Links mit einberechnet und als Faktor nimmt, kann man sogar auch ein wenig auf die Qualität der Seite schließen. Das alles berechnet G. ja eh im Algo, warum also nicht das Ganze als PR-Ersatz hernehmen, denn das würde dann wirklich was aussgagen.
