I don´t know any american newspaper site that still pass on PR. Furthermore big G can evaluate the enormous amount of links under the "headline" "Paid Advertisements" (just the same as "partner" etc.) and therefor won´t give a damn about those sites.
But if you really want to check on it, just take any one of those sites and look the the PR after the next PR-Update (while checking their other BLs, too).
And finally - even if that site would pass PR it still wouldn´t be called a "hub"....
