website was 25 years old the link was on the homepage (probably from the webmaster without permission) Link pop was somewhere close to apple.com

within hours (1 or 2) the kw was in the top 3 before not in the top hundred.

Please remember you cannot control what happens on other websites .
YOU will only be punished for what happens on your own

Otherwise seo would just be a case of blasting everybodies else´s website away

maybe if you just concentrated on building the most informative website on the subject with quality every thing comes from itself

An den Penalty Filtern wird ständig geschraubt und kalibriert. Wenn Deine Site bei gewissen Kriterien sehr grenzwertig ist, kann es sein, Du schiesst bei diesen LIVE-Tests (die Google ja permanent absolviert) mal nach oben und wieder nach unten (je nach Härtegrad des aktuellen Filters und je nach DC, auf dem Du surfst).
