Its not the PR or authority that makes linking tricky....
Its the unnatural behaviour that people create......
Some examples...
You have a site.....and link to 10 other sites and each links back to you...
This is not bad....but it looks like a link trade, and google does say always not to participate in link structures to make your site stronger.
You link to a site....and that site owner gives you a link on one of his other sites.
Mostly that link giving site is a spammy site with tons of outgoing links which eventually will give you no credit for the link, but you give credit to him.
(so dont fall for this trick unless the link giving site is a good site...with few outgoing links)
Also i have noticed that these sites with ton of links get in a google filter very easy as the purpose is boosting ranks...and not providing relevant links to a certain theme.
So what is wise and what is not....
Good sites are getting links without giving links back.
For this reason i repeat it before...create satellite sites relevant to the main theme and give a link to your main site.
Get also as much as possible links from startpages and directories.
Together with good content (and many pages) you get to the top faster then you think.
